ApeCoin DAO—the community that governs the ApeCoin token—rallied and voted to launch its dedicated chain for the ApeCoin ecosystem. The initiative came from its major members, ApeCoin Special Council, Horizen Labs and Offchain Labs, with support from Yuga Labs. ApeChain has been launched and is now live on Arbitrum, aiming to cater to various use cases but focusing primarily on providing best-in-class tools and protocol-level distribution for the contributing community.

ApeChain is built using Arbitrum Orbit, a platform for creating and spinning up customized appchains using Arbitrum Nitro tech stack on top of Arbitrum One or Nova networks. The new ecosystem’s economy will be powered by the APE token and joint efforts of Ape community members from around the globe.

With the launch of the new ApeChain mainnet, Tenderly’s full-stack Web3 infrastructure is readily available to builders and creators from the start, helping shape the new Ape ecosystem.

ApeChain Blueprint for success

ApeChain is the latest step in tying the Ape ecosystem together, returning the Ape nomenclature back to the greater crypto community while providing new opportunities and experiences to onboard contributors. The Ape Community aims to leverage Horizen Labs' long-term commitment to ApeCoin and Offchain Labs' expertise in building the Arbitrum ecosystem. ApeCoin DAO decided to build and settle ApeChain as an Optimistic Layer 3 on Arbitrum One to be able to leverage the expertise, security, and infrastructure of Arbitrum while retaining control of their blockchain, yet still inheriting the security and liquidity of Ethereum. Arbitrum’s Orbit platform provides ApeChain with:

The ApeChain formal proposal outlined in detail why the team decided to move forward with Arbitrum as its base layer:

  • Speed and Block Times: Arbitrum Nitro chains lead among other chains and produce blocks at 0.25s. Unlike other stacks, which produce them at fixed intervals, Arbitrum chains only produce new blocks when submitting transactions.
  • Low fees: Arbitrum boasts some of the lowest fees because it relies on AnyTrust DA, achieving significant gas savings. 
  • Quick and Easy on/off-ramping: ApeChain will rely on Arbitrum One for liquidity, ensuring better user experience and low customer acquisition costs.
  • Account Abstraction: Low and predictable gas prices enable modeling and prediction, making it easy for the ApeChain team to abstract technical complexities from end-user experience.
  • Nitro support: ApeChain will both receive and participate in Nitro upgrades.
  • Stylus benefits: Arbitrum Stylus provides numerous benefits for developers, such as writing smart contracts in popular programming languages like Rust, C, and C++ while being fully interoperable with the EVM. This has massive implications as there are many more developers with knowledge of these languages than Solidity.
  • Timeboost: Arbitrum Orbit chains validate transactions on a first-come, first-serve model without requiring a gas bidding war. The Timeboost upgrade enables a priority lane, enabling people to pay a premium to prioritize. 
  • Cluster Chains: Arbitrum chains are not currently interconnected. This upgrade aims to change that by allowing chains to leverage each others’ validators, increasing throughput when needed.

ApeCoin DAO recently announced their ApeChain Blueprint, revealing the core approach and roadmap to building the new chain and new user experience: 

  • Content: Simplified ecosystem navigation featuring a website with dapps built on the new chain, making it easier for users to discover them.
  • Tools: User-friendly developer kits, making it easy for anyone to deploy, with an ApeChain Portal.

Yuga Labs also confirmed several initial key Web3 partnerships in The Blueprint to enhance onboarding and development, such as Caldera, with a suite of their RaaS tools, Halliday, a Web3 gaming platform, Decent, and Privy, a privacy-focused onboarding platform for a smoother user experience.
